Hire Slow, Delegate Fast: Building a Team That Runs Without You

For a long time I was the business. Every edit, every call, every fire — me. It felt like control. It was actually a ceiling. The moment I started building a team was the moment the businesses could grow past what my own two hands could do.

Hire slow

The wrong hire costs more than the empty seat. I look for people who are excellent at one thing and hungry to grow — editors especially — and I let their work, not their pitch, do the talking. Standards set early are standards kept.

Delegate fast

Once someone's in, hand off real ownership quickly. Don't hoard the work to feel needed. Give them the SOP, the context, and the room to own the outcome — then get out of the way.

  • Document the task once so you never explain it twice.
  • Delegate outcomes, not just steps — let them solve it their way.
  • Keep the work only you can do; give away the rest.

A business that depends on you can't scale and can't be sold. Build one that runs without you, and you get the two things every founder actually wants: growth and freedom.
